Pacific Boa Constrictor Snakes (Candoia bibroni bibroni)

Most Fijians are afraid of snakes, so it has been quite an adventure for our housekeeper to get used to the snakes living with us. However here she is with one of the new babies, looking happy to be handling it. I'm hoping she's a new ambassador for protecting Fiji's own boa constrictors!

Here is a new addition, a small male Fiji Boa passed along from one 9 year old keeper to Alfie, our friend's son, who is just entering the wonderful world of snake keeping. He has unusually dark back markings and a really unique striped belly that I haven't seen before on any of the Fiji snakes. He's from a different Fijian island than our other snakes, so maybe this is the start of species diversification. He's also got some damage to his mouth: he's had this for more than 2 years and it doesn't seem to change or bother him, but it does give him a rather rakish expression.

The genus Candoia comprises a group of small boa species found only in the south pacific islands. These islands include but are not limited to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Fiji Islands & several Indonesian islands. All Candoia have an upturned rostral scale that resembles a hognose snake. In addition, all of these snakes have an overall venomous appearance with flattened triangular shaped heads and rounded sausage shaped bodies. Colors vary, but most Candoia are usually some shade of brown, tan or black. Several species show spectacluar colors such as reds, oranges, pinks & whites.
